The art of good sound, safety, and compliance in live music venues has always been a balancing act. I caught up with Jordan Bailey, Senior AV Tech at Baycourt Community & Arts Centre, to find out how the DateQ SPL-D3 MK2 has changed their sound-management processes and policies.
Baycourt’s Addison Theatre is a 580-seat community arts space, long known for its excellent acoustic properties and internal soundproofing. Baycourt was awarded both Small Venue of the Year and Supreme Venue of the Year at the Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand (EVANZ) awards in 2019.
Refining the balance
That internal isolation, while fantastic for the audience, creates its own challenge: the room can get very loud. “Depending on the type of show, sometimes it needs to be loud, and sometimes it really doesn’t,” Jordan explained. “We’re currently developing working a formal guideline around how loud things should be.” Jordan explained that the DateQ is instrumental in ensuring their policy will be accurate and evidence based.
Baycourt also manages The Cargo Shed, a neighbouring venue with tighter local noise restrictions after 10:30 pm. Together, these spaces required a consistent, defensible way to manage volume that would hold up across everything from community theatre to rock gigs.
The problem with earlier systems
Before adopting DateQ, Baycourt had tried other SPL monitoring systems — but they didn’t meet the needs of a busy Council-managed venue. “Our old system only held 24 hours of logs and needed specific software just to access them,” said Jordan. “If you wanted longer logging or more features, you had to pay for expansions. When you’ve already spent good money, that’s not ideal or fiscally responsible.”
Data retention and transparency were key requirements: the team wanted a solution that could show live information to engineers, while also giving management long-term records for policy, safety, and compliance reporting.
Why the SPL-D3 MK2 stood out
After a thorough search, Baycourt landed on the DateQ SPL-D3 MK2 — a system Jordan describes as truly all-in-one. “It’s got everything built in — the display, the microphone, the logging, the web server. You don’t need any extra hardware to see or control it.”
The SPL-D3 MK2 includes selectable A, C, or Flat weightings, built-in Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) or standard PSU power, and a web interface that lets staff monitor events live from their office. “We can be sitting upstairs and log in remotely to see how it’s going in the auditorium without having to pull logs after the fact,” Jordan said.
For Baycourt, the simplicity was a major advantage. “You can set it up in under five minutes. Plug in power, connect the mic, and you’re done. Out of the box, it’s worth the investment for the efficiencies and time savings you get on the other end.”
Making sound levels visible
One of the biggest changes has been the cultural shift for visiting engineers. “It’s been a head-turner,” Jordan laughed. “Touring engineers walk in, see this big bright display, and straight away ask what the room limit is.”
Baycourt intentionally runs the SPL-D3 MK2 at full brightness. “We wanted it to stand out — it changes colour from orange at around 87–92 dB to red above 92. It’s really clear when you’re pushing it too hard.”
That immediate feedback has made conversations about level expectations easier. “It starts the conversation before the show even begins. We don’t have to step in halfway through — everyone can see where they’re sitting.”
A tool for responsibility and reassurance
The SPL-D3 MK2 isn’t just about enforcement — it’s about confidence. With real-time feedback, long-term logging, and built-in alarm outputs for potential integration with compressors or limiters, the system allows venues to operate transparently and responsibly.
“It gives both the tech team and management peace of mind,” Jordan said. “If there’s ever a question about volume, the data speaks for itself.”
The unit’s installer-licence system ensures only authorised personnel can adjust calibration or threshold settings — a design that protects compliance integrity, especially for council-run spaces. “It means random techs can’t just go in and tweak things. It keeps everyone honest.”
Small details, big impact
Even setup placement was thoughtfully considered. Baycourt’s measurement mic sits centrally in the room at medium height — “not at the top or bottom, but where most of the sound actually hits the audience.” It’s a small step that makes readings more accurate and representative of the patron experience.

For Baycourt, the DateQ SPL-D3 MK2 has become more than a device — it’s a reference point for fair, consistent sound across every event. It empowers visiting engineers to self-manage, supports management in meeting compliance obligations, and keeps the audience safe without compromising on experience.
In Jordan’s words, “It’s worth the investment. Straight out of the box, you get everything you need — and it just works.”
