What does XLR mean and why does it matter?
XLR (External Line Return) connectors are the industry standard for balanced audio signals. The three-pin design carries a positive signal, a negative signal, and a ground, which allows the balanced circuit to cancel out electromagnetic interference picked up along the cable run. This is why XLR is used in professional environments rather than the unbalanced 3.5mm or RCA connectors found in consumer gear.
The three things that determine cable quality
1. Conductor material
The most common options are OFC (Oxygen-Free Copper) and copper-clad aluminium (CCA). OFC is the professional standard: lower resistance, better signal transfer, and greater flexibility over time. CCA is cheaper but suffers from higher resistance and is prone to breaking at solder joints under repeated bending. For touring, avoid CCA.
2. Shielding
Cable shielding protects your signal from interference. Braided shielding offers better coverage and durability for stage use. Spiral (serve) shielding is more flexible and better suited to cables that move frequently. For fixed installations, either works well.
3. Jacket material
For touring and live use, a rubber or PVC jacket that can handle being repeatedly coiled and trodden on is essential. For studio and permanent install, a standard PVC jacket is fine.

The general rule: buy the length you need, not the length that might be useful. Excess cable creates coils that act as antennas for interference and create tripping hazards on stage. Longer runs in installed systems should use slightly heavier gauge cable to compensate for resistance.
